Democratic Unionist Party leader to give evidence on future governance of UK
Tuesday 14 September 2021
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson MP, Leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, will tomorrow appear before the House of Lords Constitution Committee to discuss the current state of the Union, the Northern Ireland Protocol, intergovernmental relations and constitutional reform.
The session, which is part of the committee’s inquiry into the future governance of the UK, will take place virtually on Wednesday 15 September at 10.15am and can be followed on Parliament TV.
Questions the committee is likely to ask Mr Donaldson include:
- How would you describe the current state of the Union from your perspective?
- What impact has the NI Protocol had on the Union, including Northern Ireland’s constitutional status?
- Once finalised, will the proposed reforms to intergovernmental structures help build trust and cooperation between the UK Government and the devolved administrations?
- In what circumstances do you think it is acceptable for the UK Government to legislate in devolved areas?
- Are more significant reforms to the UK’s territorial constitution desirable to manage relations between London and the nations and regions, including the possible reform of the House of Lords?
