Economic experts to give evidence on the future governance of the UK

Tuesday 7 September 2021

The House of Lords Constitution Committee will tomorrow be hearing from economic experts, as it continues its inquiry into the future governance of the UK.

The session will explore topics including the position of the devolved administrations following Brexit and COVID-19, interregional inequalities and the likelihood of success of initiatives such as levelling up and the Shared Prosperity Fund.

The session will take place virtually on Wednesday 8 September at 11.00am and can be followed on Parliament TV.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Professor Philip McCann, University of Sheffield
  • Professor Grame Roy, University of Glasgow

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

  • What has Brexit and COVID-19 told us about the position of the devolved administrations and English city regions?
  • Do the devolved nations require further devolution to address economic issues?
  • Do the metro mayors/combined authorities have the right powers to stimulate growth and economic development?
  • How successful will initiatives such as levelling up and the Shared Prosperity Fund be in addressing regional inequalities in the UK?
  • Is UK regional economic data robust enough to inform devolution policy?
