Lords energy inquiry: what level of security risk is posed by relying on nuclear power?

Monday 4 April 2022

On Tuesday 5 April 2022 the Lords Economic Affairs Committee as part of its UK energy supply and investment inquiry will be taking evidence from two panels of witnesses.

These evidence sessions will be streamed live on Parliament TV.

At 3pm, the committee will hear from:

  • Lord Turner, Chair, Energy Transitions Commission

At 4pm, the committee will hear from:

  • Tom Samson, CEO, Rolls-Royce SMR
  • Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive, Nuclear Industry Association.

Questions the committee is likely to cover in these sessions include:

  • What are the main barriers to an orderly transition to net zero?
  • How should the Government improve energy security in the short and medium term?
  • How can the renewable intermittency problem be solved?
  • What should the Government do to make green finance initiatives effective in encouraging investment in an orderly transition to net zero?
  • At what volume and over what timeframe can Small Modular Reactors (SMR) be deployed?
  • How will the cost of SMR energy compare with renewables, when renewable integration and storage costs are taken into account?
  • Is the Nuclear Finance Bill sufficient to encourage investment in nuclear to meet Government ambitions of having 25% of our power supplied by nuclear by 2050?
