Tuesday 26 April 2022

Tomorrow, Wednesday 27 April, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will hear from two Government Ministers in sessions that will examine the Government’s strategies to develop and safeguard the public services workforce. The sessions will cover plans to address staffing shortages in the NHS and social care, and government strategies to build capacity in the education workforce - including tackling teacher recruitment targets.

The sessions will start at 3pm and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 2, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

3.00pm

  • Robin Walker MP, Minister of State (Minister for School Standards), Department for Education.

4.00pm

  • Edward Argar MP, Minister of State (Minister for Health), Department of Health and Social Care;
  • Tom Surrey, Director, Adult Social Care, Department of Health and Social Care; and
  • Gavin Larner, Director, NHS Workforce, Department of Health and Social Care.

Questions will include

  • What is the long-term approach to reduce demand on health and care services and build capacity within the workforce?
  • How will you make health and care jobs more attractive to make sure that people want to join - and stay in – the health and care workforce?
  • How does the Department for Health and Social Care plan to achieve parity and better integration between health and social care workforces?
  • What is the Department for Education's plan to build capacity in the workforce?
  • How is the high churn in the teaching workforce being addressed?
  • What steps are you taking to ensure teachers can access meaningful training and develop throughout their careers?
