Public transport inquiry to take evidence on the future of bus travel

Monday 7 February 2022

On Tuesday 8 February 2022, the House of Lords Built Environment Committee will take evidence on the demand, demographics, recent developments and policy initiatives for buses.

This session is part of its new inquiry on public transport in towns and cities.

At 10am the Committee will hear from:

  • Phil Southall, Managing Director, Oxford Bus Company
  • Graham Vidler, Chief Executive, Confederation for Passenger Transport.

This evidence session will be streamed on Parliament TV.

Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:

  • Passenger numbers during peak hours have fallen dramatically following the COVID-19 pandemic. What impact will this have in the longer term on the provision of public transport services? How might this affect the financing of public transport?
  • To what extent are current Government policy initiatives, including the National Bus Strategy, likely to improve services for consumers?
  • The Levelling Up White Paper commits to improving local public transport connectivity across England by 2030. Will this ambition be met? What are the barriers to meeting this?
  • What are the likely areas of innovation in urban public transport over the next 10 years? How should public policy be shaped considering both incremental and transformational innovations?

More about this inquiry

The Built Environment Committee’s new inquiry is assessing public transport travel trends in towns and cities. It will consider how public transport choices vary across different demographics and the impact of technology on how people travel. The Committee will consider future trends in public transport innovation and how public policy may be shaped in light of these trends.

The Committee’s work can be followed on its website and via Twitter.

On Friday 28 January 2022 the Committee published a Call for Evidence – the deadline for submissions is Friday 11 March 2022.
