Tech minister to give evidence to Lords committee on digital markets

Monday 7 February 2022

When will the new Digital Markets Unit be operating on a statutory footing?

That is one of the likely questions for Chris Philp, Minister for Tech and the Digital Economy, when he appears before the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee tomorrow (Tuesday 8 February) to discuss progress in developing the new pro-competition regime for digital markets.

The committee will hear also from the Competition and Markets Authority.

The committee will hear from:

At 2.30 p.m.

  • Dr Andrea Coscelli, Chief Executive Officer, Competition and Markets Authority
  • Will Hayter, Senior Director for the Digital Markets Unit, Competition and Markets Authority

Possible questions include:

  • What powers does the Digital Markets Unit need to enforce the new regime effectively?
  • What level of resources will the Digital Markets Unit need for effective intelligence-gathering and monitoring?

At 3.30 p.m.

  • Chris Philp, Minister for Tech and the Digital Economy
  • Niall Mackenzie, Director, Consumer and Competition Policy, BEIS
  • Harry Lund, Deputy Director, Digital Markets, DCMS

Other possible questions for the minister include

  • What are the most effective tools for enforcement?
  • Is the government concerned about the capacity large tech firms may have to manipulate the appeals process?

The session will be live on Parliament TV.
