UK energy supply and investment - Economic Affairs Committee to hold first evidence sessions

Monday 21 February 2022

On Tuesday 22 February 2022 the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee will be taking evidence from two panels of witnesses as part of its new inquiry on UK energy supply and investment.

These evidence sessions will be streamed live on Parliament TV.

The first session will begin at 3pm. Giving evidence will be:

  • Julian Critchlow, former Director General of Energy Transformation and Clean Growth at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

The second session will begin at 4pm. Giving evidence will be:

  • Paul Spence, Director of Strategy and Corporate Affairs, EDF
  • Emma Pinchbeck, Chief Executive, Energy UK.

Topics the committee is likely to cover in these sessions include:

  • Causes of recent rises in energy prices.
  • The energy mix needed over the next decade and beyond, to ensure reliable and affordable energy in line with the net zero target.
  • Mechanisms that have driven down the cost of renewable energy sources over the last decade.
  • Gaps in the Government’s recent energy and climate strategies.
  • Whether there is sufficient investment in secure and affordable energy sources to ensure that recent rises in energy prices do not become entrenched.
  • The role of nuclear energy in the transition towards net zero.

The committee’s inquiry is finding out if the Government’s energy strategy is delivering investment in an energy supply that is resilient, affordable and in line with achieving net zero emissions. The focus of this inquiry is on long-term energy policy and trends in the energy market.

The committee recently issued a call for written evidence. The deadline for the submissions is 11 March 2022.
