Lords Committee to question Minister for Africa in follow-up to its UK and Sub-Saharan Africa inquiry

The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean), Vicky Ford MP of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office will next week appear before the House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee.

The evidence session will act as a follow-up to the committee’s July 2020 report The UK and Sub-Saharan Africa: prosperity, peace and development co-operation, as well as covering developments in the region in the intervening 18 month period.

The virtual session will run from 10:00am on Wednesday 26 January and will be available to watch live or on demand at Parliament TV.

Questions will include:

  • What is the Government’s assessment of the state of democracy in Africa?
  • How concerned is the Government about the Russian military presence in Africa?
  • What are the Government’s plans and ambitions for trade agreements in Africa?
  • What is the Government doing to address challenges posed by China to the UK’s interests in Africa?
  • What is the Government doing to support African countries with vaccine supplies? What is your assessment of the success of the Covax scheme?
  • With reference to Africa, what was the Government’s assessment of the outcomes of COP26, and what should be the priorities of COP27, which will be held in Egypt later this year?
