Lords public transport inquiry to hold its first evidence session

Monday 31 January 2022

On Tuesday 1 February 2022, the House of Lords Built Environment Committee will be holding its first evidence session for its new inquiry on public transport in towns and cities.

This session will discuss transport trends in towns and cities. It will consider the potential impact of digitalisation and the COVID-19 pandemic on travel patterns in the long term, as well as likely areas of innovation.

At 10am the Committee will hear from:

  • Stephen Joseph OBE, Visiting Professor at the University of Hertfordshire, and independent transport policy consultant
  • Professor Greg Marsden, Professor of Transport Governance, Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds.

This evidence session will be streamed on Parliament TV.

Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:

  • What influences public transport travel patterns in towns and cities?
  • How might public transport travel patterns shift in the next 10 years?
  • What impact could digitalisation and the COVID-19 pandemic have in the long term? How should public transport services adapt to these changes?
  • What are the likely areas of innovation in urban public transport over the next 10 years? How should public policy be shaped considering both incremental and transformational innovations in urban public transport?

More about this inquiry

The Built Environment Committee’s new inquiry is assessing public transport travel trends in towns and cities. It will consider how public transport choices vary across different demographics and the impact of technology on how people travel. The Committee will consider future trends in public transport innovation and how public policy may be shaped in light of these trends.

The Committee’s work can be followed on its website and via Twitter.

On Friday 28 January 2022 the Committee published a Call for Evidence – the deadline for submissions is Friday 11 March 2022.
