Consumer experts to give evidence to Lords Ofwat inquiry

The House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee will continue its evidence sessions on the work of Ofwat, the UK’s water regulator, by discussing consumer issues in the water sector with the sector’s consumer body and an academic.
The session will take place on Tuesday 5 July and can be followed live on Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster.
Giving evidence from 10:30am – 12:30pm will be:
- Emma Clancy, Chief Executive, Consumer Council for Water
- Prof. Catherine Waddams,Centre for Competition Policy, University of East Anglia.
Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:
- Do customers support increases in bills to pay for environmental investment, especially when facing cost of living pressures? What are consumers’ priorities in relation to the water sector?
- Does Ofwat receive sufficient strategic guidance from the Government on how to balance its objectives, particularly in relation to the tension between long-term investment and customer bills?
- Should a single social tariff be introduced covering all water companies in England and Wales?
- What is the customer experience of the water sector? How well do water companies perform in relation to their obligations to customers?
