Former Law Officers to be quizzed by Lords

The House of Lords Constitution Committee will tomorrow question two former Law Officers as part of its inquiry into the role of the Lord Chancellor and Law officers.
Giving evidence will be:
- The Rt Hon the Lord Garnier QC, former Solicitor General for England and Wales, Attorney General’s Office (2010-12)
- The Rt Hon Dominic Grieve QC, former Attorney General for England and Wales, and Advocate General for Northern Ireland, Attorney General’s Office (2010-14)
Topics that may arise include:
- Definition of the rule of law and how it is protected within Government
- The political culture within which the Law Officers and Lord Chancellor operate
- Whether the Ministerial Code should be updated
- The balance between Parliamentary sovereignty and the rule of law in respect of international obligations
- The qualifications necessary to carry out the duties of a Law Officer
- Whether there is merit in codifying and publishing the circumstances under which Law Officers’ legal advice will be disclosed
- Whether the Attorney General’s oath needs to updated
