Land Use Committee looks at developments in Tourism policy

Friday 8 July 2022

On Monday 11 July the House of Lords Land Use committee will hear from a senior tourism consultant in an evidence session that will explore a number of issues including balancing land use and tourism priorities and how developments in tourism policy impact on land use planning.

The session will start at 3.30pm and will be available to watch live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 2, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

3.30pm

  • Dr Richard Denman, Consultant, The Tourism Company.

Questions will include:

  • The Committee is considering a land use framework for England. How should the impacts of tourism – positive and negative – be factored into this? What are the key issues to consider in this respect?
  • What impacts do you see future trends in UK tourism having on land use? How should these be accounted for in long-term land use planning?
  • How is tourism policy decided at a national level, and then how is this policy taken and implemented at a local level?
  • Planning for tourism is sometimes perceived to conflict with other land use priorities, such as agriculture or nature recovery. How can such conflicts be effectively managed in practice and priorities balanced?
  • In your work on tourism development action plans and destination management plans in England, what lessons have you learnt about working effectively with other land use interests? What examples are there of good practice and effective partnership working in this respect?
