Lords to discuss family migration
Monday 11 July 2022
The House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee will tomorrow be holding an evidence session on family migration, as part of a new inquiry which it will be launching.
Giving evidence will be:
- Rosalyn Akar Grams, Managing Director of Legal Practice and Children’s Rights, Coram Children’s Legal Centre
- Dr Helen Connolly, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, University of Bedfordshire
- Raquella De’Gessio, Head of Operations and Services, Reunite Families UK
Topics the committee is likely to discuss include:
- The different scenarios in which the implementation of the UK Immigration Rules can result in an extended (or indefinite) period of separation for families
- How much weight the best interests of a child are granted in family migration policies
- The challenges experienced by migrant children in the school system
- The emotional impact on children and other members of families separated by immigration rules
- The extent to which family migration rules affect the integration of parents and siblings within British society, social cohesion and community relations
- How best the wellbeing of families and the best interests of the child can be balanced against other legitimate concerns
The session will take place on Tuesday 12 July and on Parliament TV.
