Lords Committee to quiz Minister on the quality and availability of Impact Assessments

On Tuesday 28 June 2022, the House of Lords Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee will put questions about the Government’s policy on Impact Assessments to Lord Callanan, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Lord Callanan is the Minister responsible for the Better Regulation Executive which owns the framework for producing Impact Assessments.

The session will explore the issues surrounding the variable performance of government departments in producing Impact Assessments to support and explain their secondary legislation, and the emerging findings of the Government’s Better Regulation Framework Review.

The session will start at 4pm and will be available to watch live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Lord Callanan, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Minister for Business, Energy and Corporate Responsibility; and
  • Sarah Montgomery, Deputy Director, Policy & Delivery, Better Regulation Executive.

Topics to be discussed will include:

  • Timeliness and quality of Impact Assessments (IAs) and the strengths and weaknesses of the current IA system
  • The Government’s current policy on Better Regulation
  • The emerging findings of the Better Regulation Framework Review
