Lords hear evidence on the future of food production

Friday 10 June 2022

As part of its continuing inquiry into Land Use in England, the House of Lords Land Use Committee will hold two evidence sessions on Monday 13 June; one exploring the future of food production and another on carbon and environmental markets.

The sessions will start from 3.30pm and will be available to watch live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 2, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

3.30pm

  • David Robertson, Director of Investment and Business Development, Scottish Woodlands Ltd;
  • Andrew Sowerby, Regional Manager West, Pryor and Rickett Silviculture; and
  • David Young, Senior Fellow, Broadway Initiative.

4.30pm

  • Matt Chlebek, Founder and Chief Agronomist, Harvest Farms Ltd;
  • Russ Tucker, Founder, Ivy Farm; and
  • James Woodward, Sustainable Farming Officer, Sustain.

Questions will include:

  • Considering your experience and perspective, what is your assessment of the current state of the carbon and private sector environment markets in England and what are the priorities for improvement?
  • How does the state of carbon and environmental markets differ in Scotland and Wales and what lessons might be learned in England from the regulatory frameworks and incentives in place in the devolved nations?
  • What skills and resources are needed to manage changing land needs for food production?
  • Can you give us a picture of where you think technology in food production might take us in the next 20-30 years? What impact will this have on agricultural land use?
  • What do you think will be the main impacts of the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, the commitment to achieve net zero by 2050 and 30 by 30 targets on land use in England? How might new technological initiatives help support the Government’s objectives?
