Law experts to give evidence on role of the Lord Chancellor and Law Officers

The House of Lords Constitution Committee will tomorrow hold its first evidence session for its inquiry into the role of the Lord Chancellor and Law Officers. The committee will explore issues such as reforms, the rule of law and the constitution.
Giving evidence will be:
- Professor Graham Gee, Head of School and Professor of Public Law at the School of Law, University of Sheffield
- Dr Patrick O’Brien, Senior Lecturer in Law at the School of Law, Oxford Brookes Universit
Topics that may arise include:
- How the rule of law is being protected within the Government, and the Lord Chancellor’s role in this.
- Whether more could be done, either by the Lord Chancellor or others, to uphold the independent position of the judiciary.
- Whether further reform of the role of Lord Chancellor is necessary, whether now is the time to do it, and whether there are there any additional functions that the Lord Chancellor should take on.
- The constitutional boundaries that constrain the Lord Chancellor.
- The usefulness and significance of the Lord Chancellor’s oath
The session will take place on Wednesday 9 March at 10.15 AM and can be followed on Parliament TV.
