Legal academics to give evidence on role of the Lord Chancellor and Law Officers
Tuesday 15 March 2022
The House of Lords Constitution Committee will tomorrow question legal experts on the role of the Lord Chancellor and Law Officers, as it continues its inquiry on the matter.
Giving evidence will be:
- Dr Conor Casey, Lecturer in Law at the School of Law and Social Justice, University of Liverpool
- Dr Conor McCormick, Lecturer and Director of the Human Rights Centre at the School of Law, Queen’s University Belfast
Topics that may arise include:
- How the rule of law is being protected within the Government, and how the Law Officers ensure this.
- Whether changes to the role of Lord Chancellor make it more important that the Law Officers be a member of the Government.
- Whether it is appropriate or helpful for the Law Officers, as Government legal advisers, to be politicians serving in the Government.
- Whether public perception of Law Officers’ impartiality would improve if they were not serving in Government.
- The extent to which aspects of the Attorney General’s role require them to be accountable to Parliament.
- What the constitutional boundaries are that constrain the Law Officers.
The session will take place on Wednesday 16 March at 10.15 AM and can be followed on Parliament TV.
