Lords Committee to examine how lived experience, co-production and workforce training can improve the delivery of public services

In a series of evidence sessions this week the House of Lords Public Services Committee will explore a number of themes in its ongoing inquiry into developing a sustainable public service workforce.

The Committee will consider the role of the public services workforce in ensuring that lived experience and co-production improve the delivery of services and will also hear examples of best practice in developing a sustainable public service workforce from devolved jurisdictions and other countries. The Committee will further look at the role workforce training plays in adapting to and tackling future challenges.

The sessions will take place as follows;

Wednesday 30 March 3.00pm.

Giving evidence will be;

3.00pm

  • Chief Superintendent Paul Fotheringham, President, Police Superintendents' Association;
  • Dr Bryan McIntosh, Senior Lecturer, Brunel Business School, Brunel University London and;
  • Jade Hamnett, Author and Writer on Disability Issues, Social Care Future

5.00pm

  • Representatives from the OECD Governance Directorate
  • Hannah Cameron, Deputy Commissioner Strategy and Policy, New Zealand Public Service Commission
  • Rodney Scott, Chief Advisor Strategy and Policy, New Zealand Public Service Commission

Questions will include:

  • What are the barriers or challenges to including service users and people with lived experience in the design and delivery of public services?
  • What steps can be taken to ensure lived experience is considered at different stages in the design, training, and delivery of public services?
  • How can public services planning effectively reduce demand for public services?
  • What steps can be taken to translate multi-agency cooperation into practice?

Thursday 31 March 9.00am. 

The session will take place virtually and be available to watch live or on demand at Parliament TV.

Giving evidence will be;

9.00am

  • James Zuccollo, Director of Schools Workforce, Education Policy Institute and;
  • Robin Wilkinson, Chief of Corporate Services, Metropolitan Police.

Questions will include

  • How can training support people with a broad range of backgrounds to access and progress in careers in public services?
  • What different training routes can be used to meet the shortfall in the public services workforce and deliver better quality public services?
