Lords Committee to question Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Minister in follow-up to its inquiry into the UK’s relationship with Afghanistan

The Minister of State (Minister for South and Central Asia, North Africa, United Nations and the Commonwealth), Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office will appear before the House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee in an upcoming evidence session.
The session will act as a follow up to the committee’s January 2021 report The UK and Afghanistan as well as covering developments in the region.
The session will start at 10:30am on Wednesday 16 March and will be available to watch live or on demand at Parliament TV or attend in person in Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster.
Giving evidence will be;
- Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, Minister for South Asia, North Africa, United Nations and the Commonwealth, FCDO;
- Nigel Casey, Director, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran, FCDO and;
- Andy McCoubrey, Development Director for Afghanistan, FCDO
Questions will include:
- What is the impact of the war in Ukraine on contacts with the UK’s regional partners, in particular with India and Pakistan?
- What is the Government’s assessment of the current humanitarian situation in Afghanistan?
- What are the Government’s foreign aid plans for Afghanistan in the next financial year?
- What is the Government doing to support improvement of the economic and financial situation in Afghanistan?
- What is the Government doing to stop the deterioration of women’s rights in Afghanistan?
