Lords energy inquiry: will the crisis in Ukraine undermine or accelerate the transition to net zero?

Monday 14 March 2022

On Tuesday 15 March 2022 the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee will be taking evidence from Ed Northam, Green Investment Group Head of Europe and UK, Macquarie, and Simon Redmond, Senior Director of S&P Global Ratings, Standard & Poor's.

These evidence sessions will be streamed live on Parliament TV.

At 3pm the committee will hear evidence from Ed Northam. Simon Redmond will give evidence at 4pm.

Questions the committee is likely to cover in these sessions include:

  • Is the Government’s net zero strategy getting the balance right between decarbonisation, affordability and security of supply?
  • Are there any lessons that we can learn from the successful use of Contracts for Difference, in encouraging investment in offshore wind, to apply to other energy technologies?
  • What risks are considered when assessing energy companies and loans to energy investments?
  • The Government has outlined a Green Finance Strategy – what are the most significant opportunities to encourage more investment?
  • The EU taxonomy includes nuclear and gas as green investments, should these energy sources be considered green as part of the UK’s taxonomy?

More on this inquiry

The committee’s UK energy supply and investment inquiry is finding out if the Government’s energy strategy is delivering investment in an energy supply that is resilient, affordable and in line with achieving net zero emissions. The focus of this inquiry is on long-term energy policy and trends in the energy market.
