Lords to debate Economic Affairs Committee’s Universal Credit report

Wednesday 23 March 2022

At 4.15pm today members of the House of Lords will debate the Economic Affairs Committee’s report, ‘Universal Credit isn’t working: proposals for reform’, which was published in July 2020.

The report concluded that Universal Credit is failing millions of people, particularly the most vulnerable. The committee agreed with the original aim of Universal Credit, but blamed the scheme's design for soaring rent arrears and the use of food banks.

The debate will be held in Grand Committee and opened by the committee’s former Chair, Lord Forsyth of Drumlean.

The debate can be watched live on Parliament TV and a transcript will be available approximately three hours from the start of the debate on Hansard.

Baroness Stedman-Scott will respond on behalf of the Government. Read the Government’s response to this report which it sent to the committee in October 2020.
