UK-India trade negotiations to be discussed by Lords

Wednesday 2 March 2022

The House of Lords International Agreements Committee will tomorrow be holding its first evidence session for its inquiry into the UK-India trade negotiations.

The committee will question economic experts about key aspects of the negotiations, including visa rules, labour rights and standards, and overall benefits and risks.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Professor Sangeeta Khorana, Professor of Economics, Bournemouth University
  • Dr Amrita Saha, Research Fellow, Institute of Development Studies
  • Sophie Hale, Principal Economist, Resolution Foundation

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

  • How much emphasis will India place on relaxed visa rules in the negotiations? How may the UK benefit from relaxed visa rules and, conversely, what are the risks?
  • How can we ensure that a trade agreement with India supports the UK’s goals to promote labour rights and standards around the world?
  • What are the risks of a future trade agreement with India undermining the UK’s climate goals? How should we approach the climate issue in negotiations with developing countries like India?
  • How important is an FTA with India for the UK Government’s overall trade strategy and its ‘Indo-Pacific tilt’?

The session will take place on Thursday 3 March at 11.00am and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
