Fraud Committee inquiry: Google and eBay to give evidence

Wednesday 18 May 2022

At 9.30am on Thursday 19 May 2022, the Lords Fraud Act 2006 and Digital Fraud Committee will take evidence from Google’s Government Affairs and Public Policy lead on Advertising, Didi Denham, and eBay’s Senior Director, Will Semple.

This evidence session, which is open to the public, will be held in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords and streamed live on Parliament TV.

Questions the committee is likely to cover in this session include:

  • What types of fraud happen on your platforms and how has this evolved?
  • How effective would the introduction of more stringent know-your-customer (KYC) checks on your platforms be in reducing fraud?
  • What has been the impact of Google’s decision to only host adverts for financial  services products from FCA approved firms?
  • How will the fraud measures in the Online Safety Bill affect search engines and e-commerce firms?
  • What do you hope to see in the response to the Online Advertising Programme consultation? How can consumers be better protected against fake reviews potentially being used to sell fraudulent, counterfeit or fake goods online?
  • Would the introduction of a ‘failure to prevent fraud’ duty incentivise action by companies whose platforms are used to facilitate scams?
  • What regulatory, legislative or cultural barriers do your companies face when sharing data on fraud risks and fraud identifiers within the tech sector, across sectors and with law enforcement?
