How well are creative industry bodies supporting the sector? Lords Committee to quiz quango chiefs

Friday 11 November 2022

The House of Lords Communications Committee will next week take evidence from Arts Council England and the Arts and Humanities Research Council as it looks at the record of arm’s length bodies in the creative sector. It will also examine the work of the Creative Industries Council.

The session is the penultimate evidence session in the Committee’s inquiry into the future of the creative industries. It will see the Committee question the witnesses on how well their organisations support the creative sector in light of the challenges and opportunities it faces.

The evidence session will start at 2:30pm on Tuesday 15 November in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords. Giving evidence to the Committee will be:

  • Dr Darren Henley OBE, Chief Executive Officer, Arts Council England

  • Professor Christopher Smith, Executive Chair, Arts and Humanities Research Council, UK Research and Innovation

  • Sir Peter Bazalgette, Industry Co-Chair, Creative Industries Council

Issues that will be covered in the session include:

  • Whether public and private funding for the creative sector in the UK is fragmented, and how support provision could be be improved.

  • Whether Government policy gives appropriate importance to the creative industries given their importance to the UK economy.

  • The impact of the ‘creative clusters’ programme in driving commercially successful innovation.

  • Skills shortages and what funders and industry representatives can do to address shared challenges.
