Lords to question Minister for Health and Minister for Crime, Policing and Fire on access to emergency services

Tuesday 8 November 2022

Tomorrow – Wednesday 9 November, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will take evidence from two Government Ministers as it concludes evidence taking for its access to emergency services inquiry.

The two sessions will focus on leadership and the vision for emergency services and the primary care that sits alongside it. They will examine whether the Department of Health and Social Care’s measures on primary and urgent care are adequate, and how the Home Office is driving forward collaboration between different ‘blue light’ services, considering the various challenges of statutory obligations, demand, workforce and data sharing.

The sessions will start at 3.00pm and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

3.00pm

  • Will Quince MP, Minister of State (Minister for Health and Secondary Care), Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)

4.00pm

  • The Rt Hon Chris Philp MP, Minister of State (Minister for Crime, Policing and Fire), Home Office.

Questions will include:

  • What should ambulance and A&E services be primarily focused on? What steps are you taking to prevent non-urgent cases arriving at the hospital door?
  • How are you addressing blockers to urgent care caused by problems elsewhere in the health system?
  • How are your Departments supporting staff and boosting workforce numbers?
  • Both leadership and frontline staff in the fire & rescue service have indicated a strong appetite to do more to support emergency health services. They also told us that: “the barriers are at the top”. How will your Departments address barriers to collaboration?
