Communications Committee to hear from Ai-Da the robot artist in House of Lords first
Thursday 6 October 2022
The House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee will next week hold an evidence session with Ai-Da Robot – the world’s first ultra-realistic robot artist - as part of its inquiry into the future of the UK’s creative industries.
The session will focus on the use of AI in the creative industries. The committee will first take evidence from industry and academic experts on the effects of technology on the creative industry workforce and intellectual property law.
The committee will then quiz Ai-Da’s creator Aidan Meller on how technology is driving creativity and what possibilities and limitations there are on the use of AI in the creative sector. Ai-Da will also answer the committee’s questions around its own process for creating art and how it differs from the methods of human artists.
Ai-Da uses cameras in its eyes and unique algorithms to interpret its surroundings, and uses robotic arms to draw, paint and sculpt. The session will be the first time a parliamentary committee has put questions to an AI powered robot that chooses its own responses.
The creative industries inquiry has already seen the Committee take evidence from the Art Council, Creative UK and others.
The evidence sessions will start at 2:30pm on Tuesday 11 October in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords. The full details are:
2:30pm
- Paul Fleming, General Secretary at Equity
- Dan Conway, Chief Executive Officer at Publishers Association
- Dr Andres Guadamuz, Reader in Intellectual Property Law at University of Sussex
3:30pm
- Ai-Da Robot

The evidence sessions are open the public and journalists to attend.
To help with access to the room journalists who wish to attend are asked to email williamso@parliament.uk in advance.
The sessions will be available to view live and on demand at Parliament TV.
