Do we have the skills needed for the UK’s creative industries? Lords Committee to ask CBI and British Academy
Monday 24 October 2022
The House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee will this week explore whether the UK creative industries have the supply of skilled workers it needs to remain competitive internationally.
The evidence sessions will see the Committee hear from the CBI, the British Academy and ScreenSkills as well as leading analysts and academics over two evidence sessions. The sessions will be held from 2:30pm on Tuesday 25 October in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords.
Giving evidence to the Committee will be:
2:30pm
- Lesley Giles, Director, Work Advance
- Professor Steven Spier, Vice-Chancellor, Kingston University
- Lisa Morrison Coulthard, Research Director, National Foundation for Educational Research
3:30pm
- Seetha Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, ScreenSkills
- Robert West, Head of Education and Skills, CBI
- Dr Molly Morgan Jones, Director of Policy, British Academy
In the first session the Committee will explore projections of skills shortages in the creative industries in the next 5-10 years, examine the risks these pose to UK economic growth, and evaluate the extent to which the Government’s approach to skills and apprenticeships is fit for purpose for the creative sector.
The second session will feature questions on whether the focus on STEM in schools should be refreshed to give the arts greater emphasis; and the role organisations within the creative industries can play to develop and update the skills of their workforce.
