Fraud Committee inquiry: security and technology ministers to give evidence

Friday 14 October 2022

On Monday 17 October 2022, the Lords Fraud Act 2006 and Digital Fraud Committee will take evidence from ministers and civil servants from the Home Office and Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport.

This evidence session will be streamed live on Parliament TV.

At 2.30pm the committee will hear from:

  • Damian Collins, Minister for Technology and the Digital Economy, DCMS
  • Sarah Connolly, Director for Security and Online Harms, DCMS
  • Tom Tugendhat, Minister for Security, Home Office
  • Duncan Tessier, Director, Economic Crime, Home Office.

Questions the committee is likely to cover in this session include:

  • Are the Prime Minister and Home Secretary aware of the scale of the fraud problem in the UK and have they made tackling it a priority?
  • Is the Government’s cross-departmental, multi-agency approach to fraud working and how could it be improved?
  • Is the Government considering reforms to the policing model for tackling fraud in England and Wales?
  • What sectors play a key part in enabling or facilitating fraud and do you think the private sector as a whole is incentivised to tackle fraud?
    • Will the measures relating to fraud be changed as part of revisions to the Online Safety Bill?
  • What is the Government’s analysis of the efficacy of the legislative framework to bring those who commit or facilitate fraud to justice?
  • Should all victims of authorised push payment (APP) fraud be reimbursed for their loss? Who should fund reimbursement?
