Lords Committee to hear evidence on managing demand for emergency services and training for health service staff

Tomorrow, Wednesday 26 October, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will continue its current inquiry into emergency services by hearing from bodies responsible for ambulance or A&E services, and witnesses with expertise in training for emergency responders. The Committee will hear evidence on support needed for emergency services (both in and out of hospitals) and explore demand, overwork, and the training emergency responders need in 2022.
The session will start at 3.00pm and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster.
Giving evidence will be:

- Len Richard, CEO, Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, and CEO member of West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trust and;
- Daren Mochrie, Chairman, Association of Ambulance Chief Executives.
4.00pm
- Dr Adrian Boyle, President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and;
- Professor Julia Williams, Professor of Paramedic Science and Associate Dean (Research), University of Hertfordshire.
Questions will include:
- What changes are needed to address the high levels of demand and capacity challenges in urgent and emergency care? Who should push forward these big-picture changes?
- What is your view of risk appetite in urgent and emergency care and the wider health system? How could risk be better managed?
- What mechanisms are in place to deliver change in the NHS which would benefit emergency health services? How far can leaders in emergency health services influence those changes?
- Considering challenges throughout health systems, what changes are needed to address the high levels of demand and capacity challenges in urgent and emergency care? Who should push forward these big-picture changes?
- Do staff responding to health emergencies have access to the right training and the opportunity to develop skills to deal with the cases they are currently seeing?
