Jack Straw to be quizzed by Lords Constitution Committee

The House of Lords Constitution Committee will tomorrow question the Rt Hon Jack Straw, former Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice (2007–10), as it continues its inquiry into the role of the Lord Chancellor and Law Officers.

Topics that may arise include:

  • Definition of the rule of law and how it is protected within Government
  • Upholding the rule of law
  • The political culture within which the Lord Chancellor operates
  • Whether the Ministerial Code should be updated
  • The balance between Parliamentary sovereignty and the rule of law in respect of international obligations
  • The Lord Chancellor’s relationship with the Lord Chief Justice and the judiciary
  • Whether the role of Lord Chancellor should be separated from that of Secretary of State for Justice
  • The advantages and disadvantages of Lord Chancellors being appointed from the House of Commons and House of Lords respectively
  • The qualifications necessary to carry out the duties of Lord Chancellor
  • Whether the Lord Chancellor’s oath needs to updated
