Lords Committee to hear from disability rights advocacy groups on employment barriers for young disabled people

Monday 4 December 2023

On Wednesday 6 December, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will hold its fourth evidence session for its inquiry exploring the transition from education to employment for young disabled people. The Committee will hear from advocacy groups and Disabled People’s Organisations. The session will explore the challenges and barriers young disabled people face during this transition - and potential solutions. The Committee will also hear evidence about what constitutes effective support for young disabled people: from educators, employers, and the Government.

The session will start at 3.00pm and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

3.00pm

  • Lynne Turnbull, Chief Executive Officer, Disability Positive;
  • Bethany Bale, Policy and Campaigns Officer, Disability Rights UK; and
  • Amy Little, Head of Advocacy, Leonard Cheshire.

Questions will include:

  • Do young disabled people receive adequate support and advice about the transition from education to work when in education?
  • How effective are government schemes at supporting young disabled people during this transition?
  • Outside of national government programmes, what other support can young disabled people seek?
  • What types of help and incentives could be provided to employers to support them to recruit and retain more young disabled people?
  • What policy interventions would you recommend?
