Lords Committee to hear from solicitors and legal experts on rights of disabled young people in the workplace

Monday 11 December 2023

On Wednesday 13 December, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will take evidence from solicitors and legal experts in a session that will explore how the rights of disabled young people are upheld in the workplace. The session will also consider the barriers faced by young disabled people when trying to challenge workplace discrimination and employer awareness and understanding of workplace rights. In addition, the Committee will look at whether any changes could be made to existing rights, duties and enforcement processes.

The session will start at 3.00pm and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

3.00pm

  • Audrey Ludwig, Director, Suffolk Law Centre;
  • Catherine Casserley, Barrister, Cloisters; and
  • Stephen Robson, Senior Solicitor, Employment & Discrimination, Disability Law Service.

Questions will include:

  • How aware are employers and young disabled people of the rights of young people in the workplace and relevant duties for employers?
  • How far do employers comply with legal duties that relate to the recruitment and employment of disabled people? What happens when employers fail to do so?
  • How effective are enforcement mechanisms relating to disabled people’s rights in the workplace?
  • How far do the rights and duties currently in place meet the needs of young disabled people? What other rights or duties would improve the situation?
