Charities to give evidence on community sentences
Monday 3 July 2023
The House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee will tomorrow be hearing from some of the private and third-sector partners of the Probation Service, who are commissioned to assist with the delivery of rehabilitative services to people on probation, as it continues its inquiry into community sentences.
Giving evidence will be:
- Carrie Peters, Director of Justice Services at Ingeus
- Rebecca Robson, Senior Officer, Women's Community Matters (Cumbria)
- Niki Scordi, CEO, Advance Charity
Possible questions include:
- Your organisations were commissioned to deliver services to people on probation. How does the referral process work in practice?
- What services do you offer to people serving a community order referred to you by the Probation Service? For which of these services is there a waiting list, and for which of them is there spare capacity?
- Within the context of community sentences, to what extent do the needs of female offenders differ from those of male offenders?
- What are the specific needs of young adults serving community orders?
- What are the specific needs of low-level, prolific offenders serving community orders?
- The contracts by which the Government commissioned services from you are due to expire in early 2024 or early 2025. How would you like the Government to approach the next commissioning process, and how would that differ from the approach adopted in 2021? What would be the effect of services being commissioned for longer periods of time?
The session can be followed live on Tuesday 4 July from 10:30am on Parliament TV.
