Defra Minister Rebecca Pow gives evidence to Lords water industry inquiry

The House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee will continue its follow-up inquiry on the water industry, Ofwat and the role of the Government, by taking evidence from Rebecca Pow MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Environmental Quality and Resilience), Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, from 10.30am on Tuesday 18 July.

The session can be followed live on Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4A, Palace of Westminster.

Davide Minotti, Deputy Director for Water Services, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will also be giving evidence.

The session will cover a range of topics including:

  • Ofwat’s special administration process in relation to Thames Water,
  • The Government’s response to the recent apology and pledge to invest from water companies,
  • Ofwat’s relationship with the water industry,
  • Customer bill increases and introducing a single social tariff,
  • Reducing barriers to nature-based solutions,
  • Ensuring future water supplies,
  • New regulations* removing the limit on the penalties that the Environment. Agency can impose on polluters.

*Ahead of the evidence session, Rebecca Pow, has written to Lord Hollick, Chair of the Industry and Regulators Committee, to confirm that as a result of the Committee’s recent Ofwat report, the Government has laid legislation before Parliament to remove the limit on variable monetary penalties for offences committed by water companies.
