Use of autonomous weapons in observance with international humanitarian law, Lords Committee to examine

Wednesday 21 June 2023

At 10am on Thursday 22 June the Lords Artificial Intelligence in Weapons Systems Committee will take evidence on the practicalities of ensuring autonomous weapon systems (AWS) are used in observance with international humanitarian law (IHL).

The Committee will hear from:

10am

  • Sir Chris Deverell, Former Commander at Joint Forces Command
  • Tsvetelina Van Benthem, DPhil Candidate in Public International Law at University of Oxford.

The evidence session will be available to watch live or on demand on Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster.

Possible question topics include:

  • How the limitation or prohibition on AWS or the use of AI in defence more broadly be practically enforced

  • How compliance with IHL can be ensured when an AWS is being used in an evolving operational environment

  • How capable state and non-state actors of both developing and countering AWS are.
