Chancellor of the Exchequer to face Lords Economic Affairs Committee questions

This evidence session, which is open to the public, will be held in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords. It will also be streamed live on Parliament TV.

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

• Given the weak outlook for growth, what plans do you have to mitigate the tax burden on households and businesses?
• Do you stand by the plans for a cash-terms freeze after 2025 for public spending? Will the health and social care budget, as well as the schools’ budget, be protected?
• Should the Government work towards getting the debt ratio down by a specific year, rather than moving the five-year goal post further each year?
• How much contingency is there in your plans for further energy support for businesses this coming winter, beyond the current Energy Bills Discount Scheme?
• Will the changes to pensions savings, and the increase in support for childcare costs, go far enough in encouraging and supporting enough people back into work?
• Is the growth in the labour supply being powered by immigration?
• In the context of the growing complexity and length of the annual monetary policy and financial policy remit letters, is the Bank of England being asked to do too much?
• Given the recent relaxation of ring-fencing rules after the HSBC-SVB deal, will the way ring-fencing has been implemented in the UK be reviewed?
