Lords continue inquiry into Children’s Social Care Strategy

Tomorrow, Wednesday 22 March, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will hear from two panels of witnesses as it continues its review of the Children’s social care implementation strategy and family hubs rollout. Witnesses will speak from the perspective of children and young people; and that of local government.

The sessions will start at 3.00pm and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

3.00pm

  • Cathy Ashley OBE, Chief Executive, Family Rights Group;
  • Joe Lane, Head of Policy and Research, Action for Children; and
  • Anne-Marie Douglas, Founder and Chief Executive, Peer Power

4.00pm

  • John Pearce, Vice President, Association of Directors of Children’s Services, and Corporate Director, Children and Young People, Durham County Council; and
  • Sally Burlington, Director of Policy, Local Government Association.

Questions for discussion will include:

  • What are your views on the Government’s measures to support children and families before decisions are made about children being taken into care?
  • How far will the Government’s strategy improve the experiences of your staff who work directly with children and families?
  • What are the practical challenges and opportunities of implementing ‘Family Help’ models to support children and families?
  • Considering the areas the Government has prioritised, do you feel they have taken the right actions? What areas or interventions would you have prioritised?
