What do we know about the effects of blue light and bright LEDs on human health? Lords to explore

Monday 6 March 2023

At 10.15 am on Tuesday 7 March, the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will hold the second evidence session of its new inquiry into the impacts of artificial light and noise on human health.

This week the Committee will hear from two panels of academics on the sources of artificial light, the scientific evidence base for the relationship between artificial light and human health effects, including the possible mechanisms mediating such effects, as well as future developments that may call for regulatory change.

The Committee will hear from:

10.15

  • Dr Christopher Kyba, Researcher at the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences, Helmholtz Centre Potsdam
  • Professor Dr Manuel Spitschan, Professor of Chronobiology and Health at Technical University of Munich
  • Professor Shantha Rajaratnam, Professor of Sleep and Circadian Medicine at Monash University

11.15am

  • Professor Stuart Peirson, Professor of Circadian Neuroscience at University of Oxford
  • Professor Kenneth Wright, Director of the Sleep and Chronobiology Laboratory at University of Colorado Boulder

The public evidence session will take place at 10:15 am in Committee Room 4A, Palace of Westminster on Tuesday 7 March and can be viewed live on Parliament TV.

Possible question areas

  • The major impacts of artificial light on human health
  • The mechanisms by which artificial light affects human health
  • What we know about the effects of so-called blue light and bright LEDs
  • Potential changes to the distribution and intensity of artificial light in the future
