Lords Committee to quiz DEFRA Minister on light and noise pollution

At 10.00 am on Tuesday 16 May, the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will hold the final evidence session of its inquiry into the effects of artificial light and noise on human health.  

The Committee will hear from Rebecca Pow MP, Minister for Environmental Quality and Resilience at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on the Government’s light and noise pollution policies.  

The public evidence session will take place at 10:00 am and can be viewed live on parliamentlive.tv. or in person in Committee Room 2 Palace of Westminster 

 The Committee will hear from: 

 10.00: 

  • Rebecca Pow MP, Minister for Environmental Quality and Resilience at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) 
  • Dr Bill Parish, Deputy Director for Air Quality and Industrial Emissions, DEFRA
  • Rhian Thomas, Noise and Statutory Nuisance Policy Lead, DEFRA
  • Hilary Notley, Noise Evidence Lead, DEFRA 

Possible question areas 

  • The steps DEFRA is taking to ensure its policies are based on the latest scientific evidence 
  • Coordination between government departments in the development and application of light and noise pollution policy 
  • How DEFRA works with local authorities on the implementation of noise and light pollution policy
  • Work being done on possible future sources of light and noise pollution.
