Magistrates Association and Sentencing Council to give evidence on community sentences

Tomorrow the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee will be holding two evidence sessions as it continues its inquiry into community sentences.
The sessions can be followed live on Tuesday 23 May from 10:30am on Parliament TV.
At 10:30 giving evidence will be:
- Tom Franklin, Chief Executive, The Magistrates Association
Possible questions include:
- Why has the use of community sentences been decreasing in recent years?
- How effective is cooperation between magistrates and the Probation Service?
- How much awareness do sentencers have of the activities that offenders actually undertake when sentenced to a community order?
At 11:30 am giving evidence will be:
- Rt Hon Lord Justice William Davis, Chair of the Sentencing Council for England and Wales
Possible questions include:
- What facts does the Sentencing Council take into account when revising sentencing guidelines?
- What influence does feedback from the Probation Service have on sentencing guidelines?
- What solution do sentencing guidelines offer to guide low-level, prolific offenders on their path to desistance?
