Office for Students CEO and Chair to give evidence to Lords inquiry

Friday 5 May 2023

The House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee will hear from the Office for Students, as it continues its inquiry into the regulator of the higher education sector in England.

The session will run from 10.30am until 12 noon on Tuesday 9 May and can be followed live on Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Susan Lapworth, Chief Executive, Office for Students
  • Lord Wharton of Yarm, Chair, Office for Students

Possible questions include:

  • What is the main purpose of the Office for Students? DId the Higher Education and Research Act 2017 give the OfS a clear job to do?

  • Is there a need for the OfS to rebuild trust with the sector, and what actions will it be taking to improve this relationship?

  • How does the relationship between the OfS and the Government work in practice? To what extent do political and media priorities drive the OfS’ work and decision-making?

  • How does the OfS engage with students and to what extent does student input drive the OfS’ view of their interests and its regulatory framework?

  • What financial risks does the higher education sector face? Is there a growing crisis in the finances of higher education providers?

  • Does the OfS have confidence in taking on the Designated Quality Body (DQB) role, and does it intend to take on the role for the long term?
