Canadian and Australian representatives speak to Lords on CPTPP

Monday 27 November 2023

Tomorrow the House of Lords International Agreements Committee will be quizzing representatives from the High Commissions of Canada and Australia as part of its inquiry into the UK’s accession to CPTPP.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Colin Barker – Counsellor (Commercial) and Senior Trade Commissioner, High Commission of Canada
  • Elisabeth Bowes PSM – Deputy High Commissioner, Australian High Commission

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

  • What special role can the UK play in CPTPP?
  • What are the Canadian and Australian governments’ aspirations for the future development of the CPTPP?
  • What are their views on the Chinese and Taiwanese applications? What role do you think the UK might play?
  • What is the relationship between membership of the CPTPP and political ties between the member countries?
  • How will the existing bilateral agreements Canada and Australia have with the UK affect the CPTPP?

The session will take place on Tuesday 28 November at 4.00 PM and can be followed on Parliament TV.
