Is the Government on track with its long-duration energy storage targets? Lords to explore

Monday 20 November 2023

At 10:15 on Tuesday 21 November, the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will continue its inquiry into long-duration energy storage.

The Committee will hear from witnesses from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Climate Change Committee on the policy landscape supporting long-duration energy storage deployment in the UK.

At 10:15am the committee will hear from:

  • Emily Bourne, Director of Energy Systems and Networks at Department for Energy Security and Net Zero
  • Stefanie Murphy, co-Director of Hydrogen and Industrial Carbon Capture at Department for Energy Security and Net Zero
  • Professor Paul Monks, Chief Scientific Advisor at Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

At 11:15 the committee will hear from

  • Dr David Joffe, Head of Net Zero at Climate Change Committee
  • Owen Bellamy, Head of Power Sector at Climate Change Committee
  • Rachel Hay, Head of Energy Supply Decarbonisation and Resilience at Climate Change Committee

The public evidence session will take place in Committee Room 3 Palace of Westminster and can be viewed live on parliamentlive.tv.

Members will seek to understand current Government targets to support the development of long-duration energy storage and the role that ongoing policies such as the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements and the establishment of the Future System Operator will play in supporting a resilient, decarbonised energy system.

Possible question areas:

  • The role long-duration energy storage will ultimately play in a fully-decarbonised grid
  • Current policies in place or in development to support long-duration energy storage
  • Achieving targets for hydrogen transportation and storage, green hydrogen production, and a decarbonised electricity system
  • How the government’s energy policy should look in order to enable appropriate levels of investment
  • The role of new bodies such as the Future System Operator and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero in leading on the deployment of long duration energy storage
