Lords Committee to hear from trade unions about workforce rights for young disabled people

On Wednesday 29 November, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will hold its third evidence session for its inquiry exploring the transition from education to employment for young disabled people. The Committee will hear from trade union representatives on the challenges young disabled people face during recruitment or when employed. The session will also focus on the enforcement of workplace rights and the support available to employers and employees.
The session will start at 3.00pm and can watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster.
Giving evidence will be:

- Deirdre Costigan, National Officer for Disability Equality, UNISON; and
- Jane Lancastle MCIPD, Assistant Secretary, Prospect Trade Union.
Questions will include:
- What are the top-line barriers are for young disabled people when moving into work?
- What do the best employers do to employ and support young disabled people?
- How could more employers be encouraged and supported to adopt good practices?
- What are the consequences for young disabled people when their rights are not upheld in the workplace and during recruitment processes?
- How far are workplace rights effectively enforced?
- What key policy interventions would you recommend?
