Academics to give evidence on CPTPP

Monday 16 September 2023

The House of Lords International Agreements Committee will tomorrow be questioning academics as part of its inquiry into the UK’s accession to CPTPP.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Dr Giulia Claudia Leonelli – Assistant Professor of Law, London School of Economics
  • Professor Christopher Dent – Professor of International Business, Edge Hill University

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

  • Has the UK achieved its objectives in the negotiations and what concessions has it had to accept?
  • What is meant by global trade’s ‘New Risk Agenda’? How could this affect the future development of the CPTPP?
  • How might CPTPP provisions in relation to rules of origin, and the relevant side letters agreed with individual countries, impact the UK’s trade objectives? What are the overall policy implications?
  • What are the implications of ISDS provisions in relation to maintenance of environmental and other standards both in the UK and across the CPTPP membership?
  • What are the implications of CPTPP for environmental policy and regulations in the UK and elsewhere, and for UK and global climate policy and its relationship to trade?

The session will take place on Tuesday 17 October at 4.00pm and can be followed on Parliament TV.
