Lords committee to hear from experts on CPTPP
Monday 23 October 2023
The House of Lords International Agreements Committee will tomorrow be questioning a number of experts as part of its inquiry into the UK’s accession to CPTPP.
Giving evidence will be:
- Sophia Gaston – Head of Foreign Policy, Policy Exchange
- Dr Chun-Yi Lee – Associate Professor, University of Nottingham
- Dr Minako Morita-Jaeger – Senior Research Fellow, University of Sussex
Questions the committee is likely to ask include:
- What does UK accession to CPTPP mean for its geopolitical priorities and the Asia-Pacific tilt?
- Will there be a practical change to the shape of UK trade and foreign policy due to accession?
- How important is the UK-Japan relationship, and how might this develop following accession?
- How does CPTPP accession affect the UK’s relationship with the US?
- With China and Taiwan having applied to join, how do you see this being handled by members? What role should the UK play?
- To what further extent should the UK be involved with other regional institutions in Southeast and East Asia in particular?
- With trade politics currently dominated by major power rivalries involving the US, EU and China, to what extent could CPTPP as a club of 'medium powers' exert some influence?
The session will take place on Tuesday 24 October at 4.00 PM and can be followed on Parliament TV.
