Technical training representative bodies give evidence to Lords inquiry into the secondary education system
Tuesday 5 September
Representative bodies for technical and vocational training providers will give evidence to the House of Lords Education for 11 - 16 Year Olds Committee on Thursday 7 September, as it continues its inquiry into the effectiveness of the secondary education system.
The session begins at 11am and can be followed live or afterwards on Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 2.
Giving evidence will be:
- Simon Ashworth, Director of Policy, Association of Employment and Learning Providers (AELP),
- Catherine Sezen, Director of Education Policy, Association of Colleges (AoC).
Possible questions include:
- how effectively does the current 11-16 education system prepare pupils for the full range of options available in the 16-19 phase?
- which qualifications best prepare pupils for post-16 technical or vocational pathways (including apprenticeships) and are these qualifications sufficiently valued and supported in the current 11-16 system?
- to what extent do the organisations you represent use qualification results at 16 as a measure of a pupil's suitability to pursue particular 16-19 routes? Would reducing the amount of exam-based assessment at 16 impact how these qualifications are viewed and used by post-16 institutions?
- how does the requirement to achieve at least a grade 4 in GCSE English and maths affect pupils who want to pursue technical and vocational pathways (including apprenticeships) post 16? Should this requirement change, and if so, how?
- would you support English, maths and digital functional skills qualifications being more widely taken by pupils at key stage 4 instead of, or alongside, GCSEs?
