Academics to give evidence on use of electronic borders

Monday 15 April 2024

Tomorrow the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee will be hearing evidence from academics, as part of its inquiry into electronic border management systems.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Dr Niovi Vavoula, Associate Professor and Chair in Cyber Policy, University of Luxembourg
  • Professor Tim Wilson, Northumbria Law School

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

  • What is your current understanding of the timescale for the introduction of the Entry Exit System (EES) and Electronic Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), and the rollout of Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

  • Looking at electronic authorisation schemes generally, and the ETA in particular, where does the balance lie between increasing border security and improving ease of travel for passengers?

  • What are the possible implications for individuals of a refusal of an ETA, or an ETIAS?

  • What are the potential privacy concerns associated with electronic travel authorisation schemes?

  • Where are the boundaries between immigration and law enforcement authorities?

  • What are the implications for border management now that the UK no longer has access to key EU systems?

The session will take place at 10:30am on Tuesday 16 April 2024 and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
