Lords committee launches inquiry into the UK’s future skills needs

Friday 19 April 2024

The House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee will begin its short inquiry into the UK’s future skills needs by hearing from former ministers Robert Halfon MP and Charles Clarke.

The session will run from 10.30am on Tuesday 23 April and can be followed live on Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4a, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Rt Hon Robert Halfon MP, former Minister of State for Skills, Apprenticeships and Higher Education
  • Rt Hon Charles Clarke, former Education Secretary
  • Lord Layard, Co-director of the Community Wellbeing programme, Centre for Economic Performance

Possible questions include:

  • What were the biggest challenges you faced in Government, or advising it, in trying to improve the skills of the UK’s workforce?
  • What types of skills do you think will be needed for the future of the UK economy?
  • What should the role of business be in encouraging the development of skills in the UK?
  • Do you feel that it is clear to everyone involved in the skills system what the roles of the Government, employers, individuals and institutions are within that system?
