Are Government interventions delivering results for UK companies looking to scale up?

Monday 02 December 2024

The House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee will next week take evidence from the British Business Bank, Innovate UK and the Arts and Humanities Research Council as it continues its inquiry into scale-ups in the AI and creative tech sectors.

The evidence session will look at how effective state intervention through public bodies has been in helping successful UK start-ups in the AI and creative tech sectors to grow.

The evidence sessions will start at 2:30pm on Tuesday 3 December in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords. Giving evidence will be:

2:30pm:

  • Louis Taylor, Chief Executive Officer, British Business Bank and Chair, British Patient Capital

3:30pm:

  • Esra Kasapoglu, Director of AI and Data Economy, Innovate UK
  • Professor Christopher Smith, Executive Chair, Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)

The first session will focus on the performance of the British Business Bank in supporting UK scale-ups, including supporting innovative tech companies to access capital, and assess whether existing programmes from the bank are keeping pace with technological change.

The second session will look at the role that Innovate UK and AHRC play in helping innovative businesses grow. It will examine whether they have the resources and expertise to support effectively scale-ups in the AI sector, as well as the design of the second wave of the Creative Industries Cluster Programme.
